Last Saturday I went to the Rock the Bells with Tony and Billy. We took the waterway boat to governor’s island, which looks like a prime set for apocalyptic zombie movies and trekked our way to where the festival was being held.
Just need to mention that right when we got in there we searched for food and I found a stand selling Arepas. I love these things for some reason cause theyre so tasty and I only see them during street fairs. Its a soft corn based circle bread grilled with cheese on top. Very yummy. OK. oh and I had some sweet potato fries :p So bad but what the heck?
Lauryn Hill came on. I was so excited to see her but I must say it was a little disappointing. Some of her sets involved rock music and I guess I could have been more open to the new style but it just wasn’t doing it for me. I also think her singing and their playing did not keep in pace with one another. There were moments when she just sang without music and that was priceless. “Ready or Not” at the end of her set was reallly good. She called out Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Jay-Z and even Chris Rock to come out onto the stage with her.
In between the performances we bumped into my friend Anthony from my Italy study abroad :) Pretty cool.
Tribe Called Quest was definitely the best group of the night. They just kept the crowd hyped the whole time. I never really listened to them before but some of the lyrics I caught I was like damn, clever boys. Got to listen to them now. At one point Q-Tip ran down the middle aisle of the crowd where there were barricades. We happened to be near those barricades and then he moved and stood up on the bars right in front of us! I would’ve been able to touch him if my arm was longer :( but that was a big highlight. They called out Busta Rhymes and it was like omg :p
Wu-Tang Clan, can’t say anything bad about them. Although I started to get really tired from standing and almost fell asleep near the end of their performance. We stayed away from the front for that one cause everyone just rushed up when they came on.
Snoop Dogg was heard even more from afar but he called out Dr. Dre and it was just nice sitting on the grass eating funnel cake and bobbing heads to gin and juice.
Awesome night basically.
